I’m training him to potty outside for only like 5 days. He seems to have a general idea about it, but he still does it inside sometimes. I don’t know how he will ever learn to not do it inside at all. So what’s the successful result? Like, will he learn to hold it until I take him outside? Thank you!
I find that if I take a puppy outside at least every two hours then they learn to potty only outside. Yes, you will have a few accidents inside, but with thorough cleaning so that no smell remains, then your pup should not return to the scene of the accident. When you take him outside, take him to the same place every time. He will smell where he has gone before and instinct will kick in and before you know it he will be completely trained to potty outside. This will take extra time on your part in t he beginning, but you will definitely reap the rewards later on.

Yes, if you are consistent he should have no accidents. It isn’t until dogs are around 1 year old that they can be completely free of accidents - puppies will always have problems, even if they’re well-trained.

You have to keep with it. He will eventually figure out that going in the house is not acceptable. Of course, there can always be accidents if you leave in unattended too long, but that should be the exception, not the rule.
When he goes in the house, let him know that you are not happy and put him outside (if you can). He will learn.
The successful result will be that you don’t step in something in the dark!!!

depends on the breed. Some dogs just never are fully house broken. I have a Pit bull mix and a terrier/dachshound mix. The Pit bull caught on quickly and still to this day hasn’t had an accident in the house. My other dog on the other hand will go when she needs to go.
Pit-3 yr old currently (Hasn’t had accidents since 4 months Old)

If the pup is catching on, I would say you are doing a good job. If you are not doing this, I would recommend rewarding the pup with a treat when they do their job outside so the get the ‘oh if i potty outside I get a treat’.
It also might be good to get a crate or ‘kennel’ just big enough for the adult size of your pup and keep them in that at night and while you are away.

Yes he will definitly get it. A lot of it comes with maturaty like standing by the door to let you know he has to go out. Just be patient and remamber to always reinforce and good luck!

How old is he? They can only hold it for so long as puppies. He will learn to hold it but not until he is old enough to hold it for many hours. The best way to train them is to never let them out of your site. If the puppy wanders to another room, quietly get up and spy on him. Don’t let him know you are watching him. This way he will think he cant sneak away to potty because you will always know. The moment he squats, tell him NO and put him outside. Take him out first thing in the morning. Then feed him. Take him out again about 15 minutes after feeding and then take all food away. Same thing with his afternoon feeding. It works best if you feed the dog the correct amount on a strict schedule. Its time consuming for you but if you allow him to have full run of the house when you are there and just follow him every time he sneaks out of sight and you catch him squatting, it will help house train him alot faster than any other way.
Also use the same words every time.. Like "potty" "outside" etc.. He will learn what these words mean. When he goes outside, say good potty (ot whatever you call it) and give him a small treat. When hes inside ask him if he wants to go "outside". Take him by the door and see if he shows a reaction. Etc…

I’ve had dogs that were potty trained in a week or two and then I’ve had it take months. It all depends on the dog’s size, bladder size, interest, how consistent you are and lots of other stuff. A properly trained dog will hold it for about 8 hours but that won’t happen til about at least a year old cause most dog’s bladders don’t mature til then.

A rule of thumb is that your puppy can be considered housebroken when it has not eliminated in the house in 2 to 3 months. Also, trainers generally consider 8 weeks to be the proper age to begin potty training. I ran across a pretty good, concise article on this. I’ve included the link below. Hope it helps.
