Our family has had dogs for years, and this always works.
Hang a bell on a long string from the door knob. Every once in a while take the puppy outside to use the bathroom. Before you walk outside, tap the dogs nose to the bell. After a while the puppy will realize to go outside that he has to ring the bell. He will eventually catch on and you wont have to clean up messes anymore :)
References :
When potty training a dog, you MUST take the dog outside every 2 hours to use the bathroom. Take a treat with you in-case she does go. Whenever she uses the bathroom outside give her the treat and reward her with lots of attention. Get excited! Do anything to let her know that she did good. Also be sure to say "Good" that is the most important thing, she will slowly learn that "good" means that she is doing the correct thing. When she uses the bathroom in the house, never ever will you hit the dog, raise your voice, or scare the dog. If you just find pee, pick it up without saying anything to the dog. If you do, the dog will become confused. But if you catch the dog in the process, then simply say "No" and pick the dog up and take it outside. Whenever you install the dog door. Be sure that the dog can not leave the yard. It is NEVER too early to train your dog. Whenever the dog door is installed, start training right away. And remember that training a puppy is SO much easier then training a full grown dog. Also remember that dogs do NOT speak English, so there is absolutely no reason to lay a hand on the dog. Dogs speak dog. The key to og training is,
1. Find the problem.
2. Solve the problem.
3. Get the dog to understand me.
4. Keep the dog from doing it again.
5. Never raise my voice or get angry.

These are the steps to help you train your dog easier. You dont need anyones help. Just know your dog and find a way to get the dog to understand you. I will be here for you anytime if you get stuck and need some help.
References :
Dog trainer of 15 years.

We trained our puppy to use the bathroom outside simply by taking her outside every four hour to go to the bathroom. At first she didn't get it and would just want to play but sooner or later she would go and we would bring her back in. Also, if she had an accident in the house we would take her over to the "crime scene" and stick her nose right down next to it, it may sound cruel but it will teach the dog that the house is not an okay spot to use the bathroom. Dogs are smart animals and it will quickly learn the routine.
I don't recommend using the mat because you want the dog to learn that going to the bathroom is for outside only so that when you build your doggy door it will be easier for you to train the dog.
