We learned in training class something similar to the Potty Bell that the first poster suggested, but a little different way to train them to use it.

We learned a touch command. You start by saying "Touch" and pushing your palm up against your dog's nose, then giving a treat with the other hand. Do this 8-10 times using the command every time, and then hold your hand a few inches away from their nose and say "touch". They'll get the idea very quickly. Then you hold your hand out to the side, and then to the other side so they have to get up and walk to it, or stand on their hind legs to reach. And then replace your open palm with an object (such as the bell). Once they have that down, you can put the bell close to the door, and have her touch the bell every time you take her out. She'll associate going outside with ringing the bell.

Just another variation. My dog loves the touch game. Free treats for very little effort. She gets bored very quickly if treats aren't involved with that one.
References :
with our dog, we never formally taught him to tell us. we didn't teach him to ring a bell or scratch the door, but he still gets the message across if he REALLY needs to go. he hangs around the door, or whines from discomfort. he very, very rarely resorts to that, though, because he goes out every couple hours anyway, and just relieves himself then.

you can formally teach her to alert you.
what do you want her to do?
you can teach her to ring a bell when she needs to go out.

it's the same idea if you want to teach her to scratch the door or something.
however, whenever you do that, you MUST supervise her when she's outside. TAKE HER OUT ON A LEASH. unless you want to be bothered by a dog incessantly ringing the bell or scratching the door because she just wants to go out and play, make it clear that the bell is for POTTYING ONLY. take her out, have her do her business, and then RIGHT BACK INSIDE. you can let her out to play again after a few minutes when she's lost the association of the bell.
References :
Do what i did with my german shepard mix... when i was training him, everytime i was about to take him outside to do his business, i would grab his paw and made him scratch the door. This will teach them that when they want to go to do their business they have to scratch the door. Hope this helps.
