potty training puppy?

<< Potty training puppy?  Potty Training puppy? >>

I have a puppy (almost 5 months) I let him out of his crate to go potty and play outside quite often throughout the day. I live in the Seattle area, so the rain will begin SOON, and that means less time out for him. I’d love for him to come in the house without being in his kennel, but he urinates on the floors. Can anyone give me any tips on how to train him, so that he can enjoy our home with us?

Do NOT use pee pads. This teaches your dog that it is ok to go in the house and confuses him.

Always keep him in the same room as you so you can keep an eye on him. If he wanders too much get a leash and tie him near you so you can watch. As soon as he starts to go tell him no no no no and run him outside. When you goes outside praise him. AS he becomes more trustable you can let him have 2 rooms at a time and eventually you won’t need to watch him at all.

If you can’t watch him or are gone put him in a crate. Most dogs will not go where they sleep. This will also set your dog up for success. Since he can’t go in the house because he is in a crate or being watched and corrected then he won’t have a chance to get away with and think, well, if mommy’s not home I can pee on the carpet! and it will take much longer to re-train the more often he goes.

Do not leave his water or food out. After he eats or drinks find out how long it will take for him to have to go. Then get him outside when he’ll need to go and reward him for going potty outside.

Take him out before bed and before going in his crate, and don’t give him food or water 2 hours before bed or being in a crate for a few hours.

Good luck!

That’s regular for a puppy. You need to house brake him. To do this, you should start out with puppy pads. These take the attention of the puppy and that’s all they pee.

Umm puppy pads that u can buy at petsmart and other pet stores. If u don’t want to spend money on them u can put down newspaper. or u can put dog diapers on them!

I had to housebreak my Mastiff puppy when he first got here and I took it very seriously since if I failed, we would have what the breeder referred to as "ocean front property" Yikes! Basically housebreaking is a multi part process. if you do one of the parts wrong, you are sabotaging yourself. So the different parts are
    1. Scheduling
    2. Diet
    3. Odor Neutralization
    4. Confinement
    5. Correction
    Scheduling is as follows.
7am Take puppy out as soon as they wake up. Praise them outside once they go.
7:30am Feed and let them have water. Only keep the food and water down 15 minutes. Put the food and drink up and take the puppy straight outside. Praise when they go.
( Make sure they do go and stay out longer if it takes a while - if you give up too early they WILL go in the house. )10am Put water down only for fifteen minutes followed by outside for them to go pee again.
11:30 Put food and water down both for fifteen minutes again, back up and then out the door for them to go.
2:30 Put water down for 15 min and then outside for pee.
4:30 Feed, water and walk as described above
7:30 Water and walk ( no more water after this one)
11 last walk of the day
    crate
DIET - As far as the Feeding goes, do not overfeed or underfeed. If you overfeed they will need to go outside more. Ask your vet or look on the back of food container for info. If you feed to little, they will chew on anything they can find!
ODOR - Make sure and clean up all accidents completely. if there is carpet that makes it hard to do this, try and confine puppy’s play area to hard wood or tile floors for now. If they can find the spot again, you are hurting the process.
CONFINEMENT Do not let your puppy out of your sight. Certainly let them out of the crate to play within your sight and spend time with them but do not let them even aroudn the corner. They dont know how to signal you yet that they need to go and the less accidents they have, the faster the process will go. Remember that puppies need to go outside RIGHT AWAY after they wake up from naps, get done with horsing around, or eat and drink.
CORRECTION Dont punish or push face in messes. Just say NO and let them outside immediately followed by praise which nearly embarrasses you.
This might seem extreme as a schedule but you can modify it if you are not at home. Just use common sense in modifying it. You need to be super super consistent and they WILL learn. Just be patient and know that it is only a matter of time.
