<< Spratly K9 Obedience Training  potty training my puppies? >>

My family just got two cute little beagle puppies, and I was wondering if anyone would have any advise on potty training them…

Well, it is really simple. What you need to do is ask them often if they need to go to the bathroom and then you take them outside. Stay consistent with this and through time they will just go to the back door when they need to go to the bathroom.

Crate training is the quickest and most effective way to train. You can find plenty of info online about it.

When I got my beagle I had to potty train him as he was only 8 weeks old. Always take them out after they have eaten and/or drank water, after you have had a good play with them, before bed and upon awaking to prevent accidents. As a rule of thumb I took my beagle out every 2hrs if none of the above and over time he got use to going out. If you are worried about accidents then buy some puppy pee pads for training and slowly over time move them closer and closer to the door and then out door to the grass. Once they pee on the grass praise them. If they pee on the carpet or lino and you see the puppy do it then tell them in a firm voice NO! Hope that helps.

I got my beagle puppy when he was 9 weeks old. I crate trained him and he was housetrained in two weeks time. Put your dog(s) in a crate which is the correct size. Your dog should be able to stand up and turn around in it, but no bigger. If it is any larger, it will soil in it. The dog will alert you either by whining, crying, or barking, when it needs to go potty. Immediately take it outside, tell it "Go hurry up" or "Go potty", or what ever other key word you like. If the dog hasn’t pottied within 10 minutes, bring it back inside, but put it right back in the crate. If it DOES go potty, in a very excited voice, say "Yes! Good puppy, good potty" and immediately give it a treat. In no time, your dog will associate going potty outside is a very good thing which they get treats for. Dogs want to please their people and giving it a treat and praising your puppy tells it that you are happy with it and it pleased you. Puppies should be taken outside at least every half hour! Also, feed your dogs at the same time every day, which will help you regulate their toileting needs and monitor the amount of water they drink. Puppies have small bladders and need to urinate very frequently, so if they’ve had water recently, take them outside! You can also tie some bells around your door and show your dog(s) how to touch them, which teaches them how to alert you that they need to go outside. When ever they touch the bells, immediately take them outside to go potty. If your dog(s) have an accident in the house, clean it up when they are out of the room, but do not scold or punish them. If you see your dog(s) sniffing the floor or walking in circles, immediately take them outside. If you catch your dog(s) squatting or lifting a leg, immediately say "NO!" and pick them up and take them right outside. You can also tie them to you with their leash so that you can keep an eye on them and will know when they have to go potty and can take them right outside. Beagles are VERY smart little dogs and will catch on very quickly. If you aren’t aware of it, there is a very good beagle forum on the web which is populated by people who are owned by beagles, which I am a member of. Many of the people there are either beagle rescuers or beagle breeders and their help and advice has been very useful when ever I’ve had a question or a problem with my beagle. If you’d like to know more about that site, please email me directly and I’ll be happy to direct you there. Or, if I can be of any more help with your beagle puppies, I’ll be more than happy to help you if I can. Enjoy your beagles…they’re a lot of fun!

When my beagle, Ringo, first arrived, we thought he might be nervous around all the new people. So we set newspaper on the floor for him to pee on. Once they get used to living with you, try taking them outside after feeding them as well as every few hours. When they do their business outside, pat them and praise them. When they mess the floor inside, tell them no but don’t yell or hit them. After that, remember to take them outside for a pee and they should be fine. If you live in an apartment or in the city this method might not work.

Watch’em really close take’em out for a potty walk every 30 minutes praise them when they do good. Smack their butt with a rolled up news paper when they don’t. NEVER spank your dog with your hand, a little smack with the newspaper will do just fine.

Be patient, it takes some time to be trained.
Be consistent where the puppie has to pee (reward everytime he does it correctly) and when an accident happens buy a product to take the smell and make him do it again.

A friend told me that you have to count how many months is how may hours they can hold the pee before an accident, so the walks help a lot.

the rewards work more than any punishment, so make a huge party or say "Good dog" everytime he do something correct, and when a mistake say firmly "No" or "Bad dog", also clarify "No poo inside the house"

if everybody uses the same words it helps a lot, for him to kind of memorize the orders (and behave everywhere at anytime)

have fun with the puppies :)

i dont kno if this is the same as outdoor dogs but they start to sniff around and when you see that happening, quickly carry them and put them on a pee-pee pad. and/or they start to whine a little and so put them on the pee-pee pad or take them outside. if you cant catch them before, find out how often they go to the bathroom and how much water they drink. if you see them drinking a lot, watch them closely and about every ten to fifteen minutes, take them outside to pee on.
    worked for me.
