Although there are so many different ways to potty train a puppy. It is very difficult to find one that suit your pup’s need and fits your life style.
A Simpler Method for Indoor Potty Training :
This method is like making a deluxe crate = a better larger crate with a bathroom in it .
This way your new dog won’t go all over the house at the beginning while he/ she is still learning to master it’s potty training skill.
Using a traditional crate will be too hard for people who go to work 8 - 5 daily and when the puppy is still too small to hold their pee for 7 -9 hours.
This method I created is proven to be VERY SIMPLE for ANY pups to understand. It even works for older/ untrained dogs, house with multiple dogs like mine, or hyper pups who can’t focus.
It also works for busy owners and family with children who likes to keep the house clean & urine- free.
You MUST START THE POTTY TRAINING STEPS BEFORE YOU BRING YOUR DOG HOME. Yes, that’s right !
What that means is, before you bring your new dog home, you must :
1. Get a GATE / PLAYPEN for your home to make boundaries for your new dog.
Your house is too big and confusing for the new dog and it needs your help to make it simpler for him/ her by using gates / playpen.
*In my video I use Small Animal Playpen (Large size).Brand : All living Things, available in Petsmart for $41
2. Choose a specific area for them to go potty (this method was designed for indoor potty training for small to medium dogs, for bigger dog I recommend using outdoor potty training).
Pick a LOW traffic area, like: the corner of a room, in a spare room, etc. Remember, this area will be pretty PERMANENT ! Your dog will always go to that same area, so choose the area very carefully and calculate the pros and cons in choosing it (kitchen is not optimal).
3.Treats (cut them in small pieces)
Now use the playpen/ panels gate to make a Potty room. Put 2 - 4 potty pads on one side, and bed+water+ food+ toys on the opposite side of potty pads. (Don’t forget to put the OPENING of your gate on the BED’s side, NOT on the potty pad side, this is to avoid any MESS. Because your dog will come and greet you at the opening, and we don’t want it to step on it’s urine or poop).
As soon as your new dog come home (I’ll use male dog for this example), Potty training starts RIGHT AWAY.
- Put him inside the potty room right away, leave him in there for 1 hour or more to settle down or even sleep. Your new dog most likely will do 1 pee / poop on the potty pads inside the potty room, give praise & Treat asap.
Then now you can let him out to roam the house for 1 hour (and NOPE !! your new dog IS NOT potty trained yet. But he already started to learn)
- Then ask your dog to “go potty again after 1 hour, WALK him to the potty room, enclosed gate, and tell him to “go potty”.
If he doesn’t go, leave him in there for extra 1/2 hour to 45 min or until it goes potty. If he falls a sleep, then just let him rest for a while. Once he wakes up, ask again to “go potty” (dog usually go potty approx. 5 to 20 min after nap)
- Write down your dog potty times. You will notice how often your dog go potty, some dogs go every 1 hour some 1.5
- Now watch your dog’s potty / poop routines for 1 day . How soon after meal does he go potty, how soon after nap, how often he goes to the bathroom to pee or poop in a day, etc. This sounds complicated, but it is pretty SIMPLE !
- WRITE THEM DOWN as a POTTY SCHEDULE (this is for you so you don’t forget them the next days)
-Because he can’t go in the potty room on their own YET, at the beginning you have to ask your him to go potty according to his potty schedule.
- Ask him to go in the gated area and close the gate.
- When he did go potty give PRAISE and TREAT everytime, then you can let him out.
- Repeat the word “go potty” several times if he refuse to pee/ poop, then leave him alone in the potty room.
- Come back to check on him, don’t stare. Do not yell / hit, this is not a punishment room !
-Repeat steps according to potty schedule and eventually he will go in and out without being asked (& on demands)
He’ll always have that gate in their mind & he will not go elsewhere.
-Once he can go in and out by them self, you can remove the gate (approx 3 mo)
I let my dogs sleep in the crate at night until he/ she is 100% potty trained.
Remember my method will work for sure, but it can NOT be compromised !
If the new owners are NOT as committed (forget to open the door to let them in / out, don’t have the time to train etc) some dogs will NEVER be potty trained forever. It’s NOT because they can not do it nor because they are bad pups, but because they don’t get enough help and they become very confuse of what they should do.
It’s never just the dog’s fault ! You have to be responsible dog owners and commit 100% to HELP your dog learn this important skill.
I wish you and your pup the best !

Hi,
Well…, not …
Hi,
Well…, not quiet really.
Especially if you have large breed dogs.
This will be an easier way to train “indoor potty training” (in my opinion), but mostly for smaller breed dogs.
And since it’s a rental, probably outdoor is the better method for apartment (with the carpet situation and all).
:0)

Is this the most …
Is this the most suitable method for apartment living?

Well actually if …
Well actually if she is 1 and half month she can’t go out on public park yet.
Wait until she finished the last shot plus rabies.
Just take her out to the back yard.
But you need to have schedules so you know when she needs to go everytime.
Then give treats when she goes.
I would not suggest her to potty inside. It’s way too big of a dog and you don’t want to start her on the wrong area.
Outdoor is best.
Please find an outdoor method that will work for her.
I wish you the best & Congratulation.

Golden Ret is too …
Golden Ret is too big of dog to be going potty inside (now she is small but eventually she will be much bigger).
I would suggest you to find an outdoor potty training method.
If she is hyper, it is important to play with her a lot to shed some of her energy.
Bitting is normal but you want to discourage that. You say no , give rawhide / hard treat instead.
I really do think outdoor is best from now on.
I only teach indoor potty training, I am not much an expert on outdoor, unfortunatelly.

I bought my pup 2 …
I bought my pup 2 weeks ago she’s a golden retriever and she’s a month and a half now, she bites me a lot even th i tell her not to, she’s really hyper, and the vet told us to keep her in a small area with newspaper on the floor covering it all then let her free and she’ll be now going where the newspaper is, the thing is I don’t think it might work i really don’t know what to do, I work and I go to school so I can’t really keep an eye on her the whole time :/

She should not be …
Keep me update
She should not be barking if she learned it once.
Because dogs usually remember routine Well. Unless she remember the new routine better, (which is peing and pooping all over, then you are in a lot of trouble
Next time when you moved, on the first day the gate needs to be up and ready (before the dog move in) then she will just follow the old routine with no question ask. They don’t even know the difference on the house. (They only remember potty inside the gate = freedom)

Yup, moving house …
Yup, moving house means you have to let her know her boundaries all over again = Start over.
It shouldn’t take that long to re-train what she already knew. But, you shouldn’t let her go potty all over the house, that will cause you so much trouble later on.
Yes. The cat being in the dog’s bathroom, can be a problem (for some dog), especially if she is teritorial, she might not like to share bed, bathroom, or food. It’s normal.
So is there away to chase the cat away on “every” potty times?

@tinytailsnkisses …
@tinytailsnkisses My dog is 7 months old and she was just about trained to walk into a cage with the door open and do her stuff. now she reverted back to peeing and pooping everywhere. The cat went in her cage and sat down, which may have confused her, we also moved but she was doing fine at first in the new place, Last but not least we were recently walking her outside too. should I start over with a gate in the kitchen and what do I do when she starts barking to come out.

It’s easy to clean …
It’s easy to clean incase potty splash.
Some used the solid back of a wood bench, that can work. Actually anything that can serve as a tall enough wall to create a “potty room” will work.
Now you just have to find something that can be used as the door.
I am sure there are other ways than this potty training with a long gate. A lot of trainers use crates. But I am not an expert on that, I can’t tell you details on how that works. I’m sorry. I do hope I helped.
Keep me update :0)

Hi,
The gate is …
Hi,
The gate is actually very important, because if you enclosed the dog in a room, you can’t really see when he actually goes. You want to be quick in letting him out, so he can relate the two together.
(potty/ poop = freedom, so the faster he did it, the faster he gets out).
Dogs also get nervous when they are locked up and can’t see what’s going on, so they can’t concentrate in what they have to do.
A friend of mine used the back of a sofa as a gate and it worked fine. Just make sure >>

thanks!

First health check …
First health check up is good, to make sure she is in good health.
Vaccination is always needed. Deworming pills you can just get it at Petsmart, it’s cheaper. Give it once every 2 weeks until 4 months old then once/ 6 mo
Ingredients: Pyrantel Pamoate, brand : any, dose : according weight, must read direction on bottle.
If you deworm your puppy on time, stool check up for worm is not as necessary (eventhough Vet will insist).
But Vaccinations is important, can’t be late for that.
Congratulation

Hi, I’m glad you …
Hi, I’m glad you found this video useful.
I learned my first experience the hard way, so that’s why I created this vid for others.
Well..
she might just be nervous. Was she eating fine? Any sign of dehydration or anything changes in her behaviour ?
Is she a small breed ?
Make sure she is eating well the first couple of days, potty every now and then, no vomitting/ diarrhea.
She might just go anytime as soon as she is comfortable with her surrounding.
It’s good to see the Vet for puppy check up.

They are Pembroke …
They are Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Room for potty ??? or Living area ?????
Yes walking, Yes grooming, and Yes exercise.
The cage is actually for small animals like bunny, etc. But it can be used for dogs (small to medium)

haha nice video. …
haha nice video. what dogs are they? and how much room do they need? Also do they need alot of walking grooming and excersize? thnx. oh and what type of cage is that?
2010 Feb 24
very smart. They …
very smart. They are tricky sometimes and know that we actually don’t like them to stay in there for too long. We just want them to do is soon and get it over with, then go on with life.
So, they can pick up on that and they will cry or howl or do anything to get out.
“Let me out, I really can’t pee, You’re busy, etc” Once you let them out, they pee on carpet !
That’s why schedule is IMPORTANT.
You have to be strict and precise ! this will work !
Make a cup of tea / coffee while you wait :0)
2010 Feb 24
Most smaller dogs …
Most smaller dogs can be high strung and easily to get nervous. You have to pretend very calm completely to stop his crying.
Pretend like it’s not a big deal at all.
Give him a chew rawhide (on his bed side in the potty area) when he can’t go pee, and leave calmly. Ignored him for a while until he go pee. When he make a mistake, write down the time, and and the next day, make sure he is in there early.
It’s complicated to HEAR, but easier to DO, you just have to be PRECISE on TIMING

His pee schedule …
His pee schedule should be simillar, every 1 hr or half hour, make sure you know the approx. time and ask him to go in 5 min earlier. Don’t talk to much to him, just say “go potty” then leave him. Comeback in 10 min and check.
Completely ignored his cry, don’t answer ! (it’s distraction)
Once he gets it you can check on him faster.
And don’t leave him wondering alone at night. Make the gated area bigger like a room and leave him in there for a month until he doesn’t go on different areas to pee.

We’re having a …
We’re having a problem now with our dog. He was getting the method a few weeks ago, but now he just wants to get out of the potty area all the time. Anytime he’s in his pen, he’ll just beg and make noises to be let out, that it’s his only priority. Another problem is that our maltese will pee and potty at different times so when he does potty, he wants to be let out, but after he’s out, he will pee outside his area. He mostly understands that he should go #2 in the area but not pee in his area.

Great !
You have to be more strict in the timing. Make sure you are never late to ask her. Puppies are just like babies, need a lot of guidance at first. But.. they’ll grow out of that soon.
Keep an eye on her for now.

Hey so I took this to my yorkie, and he’s really, really good at this.
However, he used to pee by squatting, now he’s lifting his leg, and now its spraying all over the place, so yeah….
What should I do?
