How do i potty train my new puppies?
14 Dec 2009
I got 2 shit-tzu puppies 3 weeks ago and need some new and proven effective ways to potty train them! If you have ever had success on training your puppy plez let me know!!!!
mazy out!
Ok, well I have two Shih Tzu puppies as well, and this is what we did:
Hang a bell from the door on a string..low enough for them to reach w/ paws…Everytime you take them out (start out like every 1/2 hour or so..), say "ring the bell!" and make their paws touch the bell. Open the door immediately. Give them a treat when they come back in. It took ours about 2-3 weeks, and now they are doing really well…Keep them on a feeding schedule..not free feeding…this will help. Feed them about 1/2 c. in morning and another 1/2 cup at dinner time.
Always take them out the same door, so they get used to going out and associating that door w/ potty breaks.
Good luck!!
~Also, I would suggest kenneling/crating them at night to avoid accidents throughout the house…

well i am not terribly sure but my grandad used to have one and this is what he did: get some newspaper and put it next to its bed at night.when it needs to go it can go on that.then every night move it slightly nearer the door.then finely put it outside. hope this helped.

there is a urine spray you can get from the pet store and when you spray it on the newspaper the puppies will smell it and know that is where you want them to go. i forget the cost of it but i am sure it is cheap.

Patience, doggy treats, puppy pads, towels, air freshener and a whole lot of love.
My expertise is limited to one at a time. The scent on the puppy pad attracts the puppy pee there. I use Hartz because it absorbs a lot of the urine smell. Although there are other brands. Everytime they use the pee pad reward them with a treat and/or a good happy voice and rub down. Move the pads closer to the door and they will learn to go where the pad is. Take them out after each meal. Again if they go reward them. Patience is the key and good luck because you have a lot on your hands.
