house training puppy?

<< House Training Puppy?  does anyone have any good tips on house training a puppy she is about 8 weeks old? >>

i want to know how you house train a puppy (cocker spaniel)

I used the "Puppy Pads’ for night time. During the day I would take him to the front door, reward him for going to the door, let him out to do his business.

The reward for going to the front door worked very well. I first rewarded him when he came back in, but then he started to go out, turn around and come right back in, and beg for his reward.

Take it out after it eats, drinks. And take it out every hour. When he goes to the bathroom praise him. That easy, Do not punish him for going in the house.

Really easy but requires dedication. You need to watch them all the time, as soon as you spot them doing something (pee or poop) you need to catch them in the act and say ‘Bad Dog’ then place them outside. Keep doing this everytime something happens.

If you spot them going at the same time of day, normally this would be just after they have eaten or first thing in the morning then pop them outside. You will need to be patient but if they go whilst they are outside, plenty of praise and a treat and then let them back in.

They soon get the idea, just keep going until they crack it!

Your dog’s crate should be just large enough for him to stand up and turn around in. If your dog is still growing, choose a crate size that will accommodate his adult size. Block off the excess crate space so your dog can’t eliminate at one end and retreat to the other. (Check out the website I included).

if you don’t catch your pup messing don’t punish him, but if you do catch him in the middle of his messing, gently tell him no and put him where you want him to go. when he starts going where you want him to go give him a treat, you can also get pads that attract dogs to mess on, try your vet. it takes about 2 weeks and loads of patients. if you have carpet down it will end up stinking so keep him in the kitchen when your out and put paper down if you cant get the special pads. good luck and enjoy your new comer.

the best way to house train is crate training. i also suggest to feed the puppy in the crate so the crate is a positive place. you want to make sure the crate is not too big. if they can curl up in a ball on one end and poop on the other, they will do it! when they are closed in the crate they will scream! ignore this behavior. its best to potty them before they go in the crate so you know they are not screaming because they have to potty. dont let the puppy out until they are quiet and preferably sitting. if you let them out when they are screaming, they will quickly learn if i’m louder next it, i will get out sooner. so make sure they are quiet before you let them out. ok, if you can watch them, have the puppy on a leash and keep an eye on it, it if looks like it needs to go, take it right outside! also use a word or words like go potty or potty outside. my puppy learned very fast and will go on command. when they go outside praise like there is no tomorrow! when you bring them back in with successful elimination they can play with leash dragging or off leash for a little bit. puppies always have to go after a nap, after they eat or drink and after heavy play time. when its night time, have the crate by your bed. make sure they potty before going to bed. they willl scream but eventually fall sleep. it will be hard but you have to ignore them for them to learn that being loud doesnt get them anywhere. after they fall asleep. if you wake up in the middle of the night and they are whining, take them right outside. and then when they are done going to the bathroom right back in the crate and both of you go back to sleep. when they catch on about the crate training. you will develoop a pattern. my pup had to go out ever 2 hours and now he sleeps for 6. if your pup can hold it longer as time goes by, in the middle of the night if he wakes up lets say 1 hour after sleeping has started, dont take him out right away, listen to see if they are whining because they are repositioning themselves on the bed. if they dont stop whining, take them outside. If the dog potties on the floor inside, and you catch them, do a loud AHAH pick them up and take them right outside! if you aren’t watching and turn around and see an acident on the floor, there is nothing you can do besides clean up the mess. i hope this helps you! good luck

Ok this is how we trained my dog, hes a dachshund cross with a labrador, Ok, when we saw his "crouching" we picked him up and put him on paper, when they learn to go to the paper, edge the paper to the door, one day when he goes straight to the door, open the door, and follow him/her outside, if they "go" praise them, praise is needed for a dog as dogs are social, this might not always work but you need Patience with a dog, so its good training. If they go in the house after you’ve properly trained them, tell them off, but always offer "hugs / cuddles" after, or the pet will start to be droopy or depressed. Don’t over do the love after you’ve told him or her off, then they think they can do it again and get away with it, if it becomes more frequent, tap he or she on the nose and tell them they’ve done wrong, tell them to get in their bed / basket and come back to them 5 minutes later, with a hug, after this walk away and she or he will learn.

    Good luck

at 3 months a puppy should be able to hold its bladder for 1 hour per every month it is old. so 3 months=3hrs 5months=5hrs until one year. Take it out right after it eats and every 30 minutes to an hour. Puppies don’t sniff for a spot…they just go. Soon the puppy will learn where to go and you will start seeing a sniffing pattern start.

This takes time a patients. Don’t get mad at the puppy. Its just doing what it know to do. If you get mad and through it outside it will start to think that going out is a punishment, and not "ask" to go out. You can use the work NO to startle the pup but don’t scold.

What I have done was to hang a small Christmas bell down by the floor and when I take the pup out I ask "You want to go outside" and just before I put her out…I rang the bell. Took about a month but now, when she has to go out she uses her nose to ring the bell and I let her out….it’s pretty cool.

The first thing a puppy wants when it wakes up is the toilet so take him outside and don’t forget to give lots of praise afterwards, another way is to put some plastic sheeting down with some newspaper on top then when the puppy wakes up put him on there he will soon get the message and as the weeks go by move the plastic and paper nearer the door until its outside, but expect afew accidents to start with but dont row him, or he will get confused and may be scared of going to the toilet as he will connect this with you being angry.Good luck
