   I would go with newspaper, litter boxes are for cats, and dogs might not use it.

   My old dog used to use a litter box, it’s not hard to train them to use it but it does take time and patience. Ask the Breeder what type of potty training the puppies are currently using more than likely it will be newspaper training. Whatever method he’s currently being taught would be the easiest to continue. You may want to keep your puppy confined to a playpen or one space until he gets accustom to your home so he doesn’t think it’s a free for all. Also keep him away from rugs, bathroom rugs, mats ect. As the have a natural tendency to go on them. Good luck!!!

   The pads work well and are better than news paper because they absorb more. If you are getting a smaller dog, I have heard great things about the litter boxes for dogs. Personally I wish I had trained my dog to use a little box because then he woudln’t have "accidents" when he is inside. There is special litter you can buy for dogs you can buy- I think it is called "Second Nature".

   Just remember when training a new puppy, it is better to encourage the dog with positive re-enforcement (i.e. praise when the dog goes potty in the right place), than negative feedback (i.e. yelling, screaminng, and spanking the puppy) when it goes in the wrong place.

   The best way to train a dog to go outside is to TAKE HIM/HER OUTSIDE!!! To teach a dog on paper or a puppy pad is teaching them it is okay to go inside. Crate training is the easiest. Dogs are den animals. Don’t want to mess in their den/ where thay sleep. Puppies can only hold it for a little bit 2 hours or so. First thing in the Am. and right before you go to bed. In 15 min after playing, sleeping, eating are the best times to take puppy out. Tell them no if they have an accident only if you are catching them in the act. Not three min later when you get up and step in it. Animals think differently than people and you can really cause problems sometimes. Get a book at the petstore about the breed you have… They have great tips for all kinds of training, grooming, and general advise. Good luck/

   The best way to potty train your dog is by using the rewarding system. It works for almost all breeds and it works the best.

   have it go outside - if you teach it to go on paper it will go on all paper - I had that problem with my rabbit

   I have a Toy Fox Terrier and puppy pads and a litter box only confused him as to where he is supposed to potty..inside or outside. I crate trained him to hold it and would take him out to potty and give him a treat to reinforce positive behavior. This works really well. Once he got the idea, the crate was no longer necessary because he had set a habit. Be sure, whatever you choose, to make it a positive experience and it will go a lot smoother ( avoid yelling). And if the dog has an accident indoors, be sure and get the odor out immediately (specifically a pet odor remover)…they will go back and use this same spot. Good luck on the new puppy!

    Crate training is very good b/c you can put them in there when you leave the apartment. Make sure that they have their bed in there b/c puppies won’t pee or poo in their beds and if they do then it was a real accident. Make sure that you also leave any toys they like or a blanket, maybe something that smells like you in there with them to comfort them and so they know that they’re not being punished. Also remember that there’s no such thing as quick potty-training. Give your dog some time and be patient with them b/c they’re babies and they don’t get it right away. Get some good carpet cleaner too! Accidents will happen, sorry!

    What ever you decide make sure you stick too it. Consistency is the key. Switching from paper to outside or any other change will require housetraining twice. If your goal in the end is to train outside then skip the paper.

    Outside:
    Make sure when you go out that you get straight to business, don’t play until everything is done. Also, a fun thing you can try is setting up a bell by the door use to go outside and hit it when ever you go to potty. This way once they learn it they will hit the bell whenever they need to go outside.

    Paper:
    Training on paper is the most reliable. If you go that route you can paper a large area and then gradually decrease the papered area. Downside, is messy clean up.

    Litter Box:
    Downside, if your dog has long hair then it can get messy because thing will stick to the coat.

    Indoor Lawn:
    You can buy a patch of lawn for indoors (on PetSmart website). That way when they go outside they will know what to do. Also, you will need sun and water for the lawn, so a patio would be great for it.

    Puppy Pads:
    To me, this is a huge step from paper training because it absorbs. Also, I think they are made with a special scent to attract the dog to use the potty there.

    Make sure you setup a schedule. Create a cue for potty time as well (i.e. "Go Potty"). As always they will need to go as soon as the wake up. Make sure you give them a treat after they go for positive reinforcement.
