We have a 7 month old puppy. She will always go to toilet outside if the back door is open but if the door is closed she will not ask to go out and then go inside, can anyone offer some advice please. We always praise and treat her when she goes outside and have not shouted or punished when she does go inside. Are we doing anything wrong? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks

She will be giving a sign that she wants to out but it may be so subtle that you don’t get the message. It may only be a quick anxious glance at you or the door. Just keep a very close eye on her, especially when she hasn’t been out for a while. When you notice something, ask her "Do you want to out?", then let her out.
As someone else said, she’ll associate the words with going out for a wee - but she’ll probably just go out anyway when you say those words, but some dogs actually learn to "answer" you, either by going through the door or walking away from it if she soesn’t want to!

If you catch her in the act of going inside, shout, "NO!" and pick her up and put her outside. Do so until she gets the point that she has to go outside. Never put her face in her mess, and don’t scold her for a mistake that you did not see her doing. Open the door after she wakes up, after she eats, and before bed-time. I did that with my 8 month old Yorkie, and it worked!

we had that problem with one of ours - we actually asked the question to the dog "do you need a wee?" she came to associate this with going out which she loves doing. We gave her loads of treats outside so now she comes and nudges us when she wants to go out.
    worked for us !

There is a method that I’ve used before that works well. You’ll need to get a good sized Christmas type bell, and you hang it on the door. You ring it and take the dog out, then you start encouraging the dog to touch it, praise, give treats. Eventually the pup learns to ring the bell to go outside. I think there might be a more detailed version of this method in the answers archive. You might also want to join the yahoo group SPT. It’s a great puppy group with lots of people and info.

We trained our dogs with a bell. Like yours they knew they where supposed to go outside but couldnt figure out how to ask out. Buy a bell large enough that they can not swallow it. Hang it from a thick piece of rope on the door knob of the door at the dogs nose hight. Everytime you take your dog out ring the bell before you open the door to let her out. Make your usual big fuss and treat her when she goes to the washroom. In around two weeks she should make a connection between ringing the bell to go out side to eliminate and get her treat!
    Good Luck!

The best way is to learn the dog to bring you the leash and when the dog do this to take her for a walk.
After a while the dog will bring you the leash so he will be able to go out for a walk and I think this is the most happy moment for the dog.
Don’t forget to make understand the dog that you are not happy with him when he go inside.
    Good luck.

Anwen55 gave you a good answer.

Also, the link above might be useful. Some great trainers on there and they’re not expensive. Worth a try.

    Good luck.
