I got a four month old mini pinscher and my mom told me I have two weeks to have him partially house trained at least. I don’t know if she’ll actually go through on that but if so time is of the essence. I need help with ideas to smooth along the process. I tried taking him outside to use the bathroom but he would rarely to never go. I would sit outside for twenty minutes at the least and he would not go, then after he’s in the house for 5 minutes he goes on the floor. I’ve also tried pad training him but he won’t go on the pads. I’ve even tried the whole rubbing his nose in it to no avail. I need help if I’m going to keep my puppy. By the way, I’m fifteen so I go to school from 7:30-4:00 and I need the ideas to be clear and understandable please.
get newspaper take a dropper get some toilet water and put it on the newspaper in a circle that how i got my dog to do it hope this helps good luck
I have been house training my toy poodle puppy for a few months now but he still occasionally or more then occasionally relieves himself in the house. I have tried getting angry at him, catching him in the act and showing him where I want him to go but it doesn’t seem to be working. What do I do?
I take him outside to go to the toilet but he also has like a litter box inside just in case I can’t take him out when he needs to go and he does use this as well, but do you think this is confusing for him?
remember that puppies have to go to the Rest room every 2-4 hours… this might be why… dogs don’t enjoy the liter box… i would suggest bell training so the dog tells you when it needs to go outside… don’t be angry at the dog… dogs don’t understand punishment to the dog you being angry means you are angry but they have no clue why
how do you go about House Training A Puppy?
First off, confine him when you can’t supervise. I can’t stress enough the importance of this. For potty training, use a crate that is only big enough for her/him to comfortably stand, lie, and turn around in. He should not be able to potty in one end and lie down in the other. Make sure he’s not confined for too long — generally the age in months plus one hours (so 5 hours for a 4 month old pup). If you have to be gone longer, use an exercise pen with his open crate inside for sleeping, a potty pad for relieving himself, and some toys.
Every time you take him out of his crate take him outside. He should be on a leash. You should go through the same door every time. Take him to where you want him to potty and start repeating his potty command until he finishes. Then treat him and let him play or go for a walk.
Put food and water on a schedule. Give 20 minutes to eat and then pick food up until next scheduled meal. Give water every hour (or when he’s obviously thirsty.) By scheduling meals and water, you are able to predict when he will need to relieve himself. Put him on leash and take him out.
Watch for behaviors that tell you he needs to go out: circling, squatting, sniffing, crouching, ….
I have clients who tell me their puppies won’t go while they are outside, only to come inside and make a mess on the floor! If you find this to be a problem, give him a reasonable amount of time outside and if he doesn’t go confine him for 15 minutes when you come back inside. At the end of that time, take him back out. Repeat this process until he goes. By doing this, you are teaching him that he will earn his freedom by pottying where it’s appropriate.
Lastly, basic obedience training really can help. It clarifies leadership for your dog (and sometimes for the owners as well

My Scottish Terrier puppy is almost 4 months and we are not making any progress with the potty/house training. We do no smack or rub her nose in it but scold her and put her outside when she has made a mess in the house.
Any advice on how to make her house trained would be welcome.
Dogs work best on schedules. Some of the best times to take her out and create a schedule with are.. Taking her out when she wakes, before you go to bed, after a nap, after play, before you leave when you come home, 20-30mins after water and 30-40 min after eating. You also need to take her out how ever many months old she is in hours, so 4 months odl every 4 hours. You do this to help build up their bladder.
Always praise your dog for going where you want her to go. You can give physical praise like good girl, or you can also give treats. When she goes indoors ignore her, unless you catch her in the act. in this case make a random sound to get her to stop then take her outside right away. Praise her if she finishes outside. You don’t want to draw attention to going inside, even negative attention is still attention. It can confuse her into thinking that you want her to go inside. You want to walk around with her outside and not just stand in one spot and stay inside and watch her threw the window. Walking helps to stimulate her to go. It can also help b/c she may want to smell out a spot to go. The reason you want to go outside with her is b/c if you praise her when she gets to the door that is what you are praising her for, going to the door not for going outside.
Some people like to teach their dogs to ring a bell to tell them they have to go. To do this hang a bell by the front door at her level. Ring it every time you take her outside. Some people take their puppies paw and ring the bell.
Use a cleaner with enzymes in it to clean the areas she goes in when she goes inside. I fidn its easier to clean it with a regular cleaner than to use a enzyme cleaner to get the stain and smell out.
Don’t get discouraged. Most dogs are not fully house trained until they are 8-10months old. Its very normal for them to have accidents. You just need to be consistence and patience.

Clean up the house and it won’t smell anymore.
A lot of people seem to recommend crate training and while I can see reasons why, I would prefer not to use this method. I have two jack russell terrier pups (13 weeks old one male one female) who are getting there… every now and then though the little guy "forgets" if I don’t catch him in time, especially when it is raining! I would like feedback from people who have successfully trained their puppy/ies to go outside without using a crate. How long did it take? Any tips that worked?? Thank you
I do not know if you are at home with them all the time, or if there is a way that you can put them outside on a schedule. I always train my pets by putting them out on a schedule at first. It may seem strange however they are just like infants that we put on feeding schedules, except they are dogs and you just put them out approx every 2 hours for a few days and they will get the message. I would also give them their food and water outside while they were being trained. I would give them a small bowl of food (approx 1/4 cup) and a large bowl of water every 2 to 3 hours, and I would let them stay outside for about a half hour. It has always worked for me, I prefer putting them outside rather than pinning them up in a crate. I would also buy the spray that they sell in pet stores to use in case they went in the house. You would clean up the mess and they put a few squirts of this spray in the area where they went and this would deter them from going to that spot again. I would also put them outside every time they went in the house even if it was not the scheduled time to put them out. I would pick up their waste take it and them outside, let them see me put their waste on the ground and tell them that this is where they need to go. It seems like a lot but it really isn’t, and it has always worked for me. I wish you luck.
Scooby is my 8 pound Toy Fox Terrier I have had him 2 months and he six months old, I have been trying to house train him with the crate..how should I schedule this thing? At one point he would hold himself and go when we let him out, but now he will sit on the step and go once he gets inside.Should I leave him out a little longer? Is it because he is such a small dog and cold? Help..I am tired of steam cleaning, and spot botting my carpet. I need help this is the first puppy for my family and he is a great puppy but this is like WOW!!Please HELP
go outside with him. when he uses the bathroom outside make a big deal out of it and feed him treats. Trust me, this works. eventually he will associate using the bathroom outside as a positive thing. don’t worry he’s still young. he should out grow it but definitly try the treat thing
I have a pomeranian puppy that just won’t go on the training mats! Everytime I see him sniffing and looking for a place to go, I place him on the pads immediately. Problem is, he runs off it and does his buisness right on the carpet. Why won’t he go on the pads? I need advice as a first time dog owner. Please help!
my best advice - GET RID OF THE PADS

I got a puppy for my kids about 2 weeks ago and I am trying so hard to get her house broke but nothing seems to be working. I take her out after we get done playing with her and after she wakes up and many times through out the day. But I take her out and we are out there for about 10 minutes and she does nothing so I bring her back in and then she goes in the floor as soon as we come back in the house. Any tips would be great, Thanks
No you do not have to crate train her!
Read the article on house training on the site below and follow those step. There are also other links you can follow that will give you good advice.
HELP! I have a new puppy and she is IMPOSSIBLE to house train! I take her outside every hour to two hours. I take her food 5 hours before I go to bed and her water 3 hours before I go to bed as the vet suggested. I had a puppy pad DIRECTLY next to the door. I give her treats & praise her when she does good outside. And still after all that, she still goes right in front of the door! Whether it’s pee or poop it doesnt matter. For a couple days she was doing good. If she had to go in-between going out she went on the pad, now she isn’t even doing that! I have another puppy from the same litter as her and that puppy does good going inside, she doesnt use the puppy pad and doesnt go in the house. Why is it so hard for my other puppy to learn?
She does go in her crate, she is in there all night, but I cannot leave her in there all day! She has a very small cage since she is small but still has slightly enough room to go in one corner and sleep in the other!
What are house training droplets & how do they work?
she doesnt give us ANY communication. Sometimes she will just go to the door and sniff aroud and then go back to her bed. But when she goes by the door to go she does nothing but go up to the door 1-3 feet away and just squats and goes.
Aw welcome to the labor of love with a puppy! Some pups r just a bit slow when it comes to house training. My dog was nearly 5 months old b4 he got it down 100%. Just keep doing what your doing. I would suggest stopping the puppy pad thing all together and just take her out to pee. If she messes in the house say NO, and take her out, she will get it, she might just be a slow learner
