Archive for House Training A Puppy

Just got a yorkie puppy, she is adorable! But having trouble house training . I feed her wait a bit take her out and as soon as I bring her in she goes on the floor!

Bring her to a trainer.

what is the best and most proper way to house train a new puppy?

two weeks of 24/7 to get a good start
take out on leash, tell potty
let off in fenced yard to play with about 45 minutes, tell poop
keep on leash in house, watch, take out
crate when you can’[t watch, no more than 4 hours
get up at night every four hours to take out

I am thinking of getting a Bichon cross puppy. The problem is that I am out at school for 8 hours and both my parents work full time (although my dad is usually quite flexible with his work hours) and I am wondering how house training the puppy would work. I am planning on crate training him and when left at home he would have a small play pen with his crate, water, stuffed chew toys and a litter box. When I am not there I would like him to use the litter box but when I am there I want to take him outside instead. How could he learn to use the litter box when nobody is home but be taken outside when somebody is home?

I hope this question made sense and thanks in advance for the answers.
Just thought I should add - I will be getting the dog during the holidays so I will have a month to devote my full-on care to him before I do have to go back to school. As I said, my Dad’s work hours are flexible so he could come home once or twice a day until the puppy is older.

dogs are normally clean in there den he should be all right if he goes to a corner not the litter box put the litter box in that corner they soon learn and praise him or her when they use the litter bin

I’m house training my maltipoo puppy and i was wondering if anyone had any advice? I’m training him to go to the bathroom on a puppy training pad but he only makes it 40% of the time. Whenever he makes it i praise him, but i can only give him a treat sometimes or else it will upset his stomach since he is so small.

After he is consistently making it to the pad we plan to move it outside then just take away the mat all together.

ANY ADVICE?!?

It sounds weird but my gma was training our dog everytime he would pee on the floor she would pick him up and take him to wear he peed and get him close and say NO! And then take him to the pee pad and praise him. I didn’t think it would work but it did after like a week

Hello!

I’ll be gone for the majority of the day tomorrow (6AM-7:30/8:30PM) & was wondering how I should leave my puppy food?

He’s a Lhasa Apso, 3-4 months.
Eats 2 times a day-once in the morning, once in the evening.

How should I leave his food out for him?
Also, how should I leave him in the house? He’s an indoor dog. :)

Thank you for your inputs in advance! :)
Sorry, this isn’t going to work. Yes you could leave two meals for him to eat during the day, but if you think any dog is going to look at the clock and think hey, it’s mealtime, think again. Chances are he’ll scoff most of it in one go and goodness knows what might happen - bloat perhaps?

Is there any way you can get somebody to come in and let him out, and feed him ? Or get him into day-care (which is going to run into 3 days given your agenda)? Otherwise for me, any ideas of leaving him for that length of time would have to be cancelled. When you take on an animal who depends on YOU, priorities have to be set.

And what about his water bowl - what if he knocks that over while you are away?

Leaving a puppy for upwards of 14 hours would not be anything I’d remotely consider doing - not even for an adult either.

I am trying to paper train my new puppy, and also make her go outside eventually. She went on the carpet once, and she is 3 months old. Shes a smart puppy. But when I bring her outside she is scard and will not go potty. She is scard of noises, and the dark too. I am going to be socializing her, I just got her today. Any tips on how to brake her fear of outside and make her go to the bathroom?

I’ve never paper trained any of my dogs, I train them to go outside from day one, then you don’t have to deal with the transition.
To deal with her fear of the outdoors may take a while, if this is her first day with you, she’s probably stressed and just needs a quiet place to settle in. Let her explore by herself for an hour or two while you go about the house doing what you usually would. When she gains confidence in her new surroundings, sit just outside the back door with food and encourage her to come to you, when she does, praise her and give her food.
Go further and further away from the house until she barely notices she’s outside.

To potty train her, this is how I did it. Take her outside every hour and give her a word ("potty") and let her sniff around. If she does the right thing, praise her and bring her inside. Do this constantly and let it be the last thing you do before you go to bed. You’ll have an accident free dog in no time.

what’s the best way to house train a puppy?

You can use a crate, and a play pen for the most effective way to paper and house train your puppy. I’ve posted a picture in my source. But I’m going to explain something quickly.

See how in the picture there is a little tray with wee wee pads behind the Husky pup? Instead of having that, have a crate with a blanket inside in place of that wee wee pad tray. That way she’ll sleep there. And place newspaper within the playpen’s perimeter. Leave a bowl of food and some water out for her. Some toys and things to chew on. And she will learn to not go in the crate and to go on the paper. You’ll soon start to see that she prefers a certain spot to go at. And eventually you can eliminate all of the paper except for where she really likes going.

The general rule is that a puppy can hold the urine and poo for one hour longer than their age. For example; A 2 month old puppy can hold it’s urine and poo for three hours. Get it? As soon as she is about 6 months, you can start shutting the crate and eliminating the paper all together and start taking her out when you wake up. That way she’ll be ready to go as soon as you get out. You can bring a single sheet of newspaper out to help her get used to doing her business outside.

This is how I trained my Husky and my Lab/Pit. My dad trained my Yorkie when we got him.

EDIT: Here’s a picture of exactly what I was talking about.

Ok so I have always owned great danes. My bf has a lil pom and I like the small breed cause I can take them places. I can’t take my dane (dozer) anywhere. So after a few yrs of thinking about it. I bought a min pin puppy off a lady. She is 7weeks old. I read online the small dogs are hard to house train. The pom and dozer go to the door when they have to go and understand what "outside" and "inside" means. The min pin has peed maybe 3 times and i ve had her since yyesterday. What I have been doing is constantly saying "outside" because my dane and pom knows what it means and line up at the door. The min pin is slowly getting it. So I let them out and I wait for her to pee and then say "inside" and my others to run to the door, so does the min pin. Am I training correctly? The pee accidents happened out of no where, she would just squat and pee. I will say NO real loud, I don’t hit her. She gets real low, like she knows the tone in my voice. Ill pick her up and take her outside and set her down for maybe a few minutes and say "outside". Even though she has already peed and doesn’t pee when I take her out. I’m just hoping it will click in her head. Am I doing this correctly? Should I stick w this routine? I know she is still very young and has a "baby" mind and I will deal w pee accidents. When she does pee and I take her outside after a accident, is this correct? When she gets older, will she learn to go to the door like my other 2? I’m just paranoid cause I’ve read min pins are the hardest dogs to house train. I don’t likke crate training or puppy pads. I want to teach her outside is the only place to potty only. I also figured she would learn off my other 2 dogs. Am I training correctly? Any advice would help!
Oh and its a female. I read where females housetrain easier than males.

She is 7 weeks old. She will pee all over your house for another month, at least.

You need to buy a crate, restrict her access to the whole house, and take her out ON A LEASH, so you can reward her when she does what you want. Otherwise, it is meaningless and she will not get it.

There is nothing worse in dog ownership than having to retrain a behavior that was trained wrong, and house training is one of those irritating things.

As far as learning to go to the door, that is something YOU have to teach. You can’t expect her to learn this on her own. Why did you get a Minpin if you are so shaky on the house training basics?

Did you know that the number two reason for Minpins being surrendered to shelters is peeing in the house?

By the way, whoever sold you that pup at 7 weeks should be shot. It is illegal in many states to sell a pup before 8 weeks old, and Minpins need to be with their parent for at least 10 weeks. You have made your job even harder with this too young pup.
Hope you can hang in through the tough times…..

And get the dog in a professional obedience class before she takes control of your house. (They are famous for that, too.)

I have a 3 month old, yorkie, Pekingese, chihuahua mix. She is a complete house puppy. So far, with rewards, she has learned to pee only on the pee pee pad. Am I proceeding correctly?

Its difficult to expect a young dog or puppy to hold it’s urine or movements for more than a few hours. After all, how would you feel if your were chained to your favorite recliner and not able to relieve yourself when the urge came. This provides an opportunity to familiarizing the puppy with going out and going to the bathroom, since one can let the dog out every hour or so.

Be sure to create "KEY Word" that the dog will recognize each time they are let outside. The obvious one that I use is "Outside!" everytime I let the puppy out. You will be amazed at how quickly they catch on to key words. My puppies grasped the outside keyword along with "upstairs" and "whose here". Each time I now excitedly yell "Outside!" the dogs come running.

Monitoring when the dog eats and how much it is drinking is also beneficial, since most dogs will have an urge to relieve themselves shortly after. Puppies will tend to eat and drink alot since their energy requirments are quite high, so visits outside should be often.

More Tips for House Breaking - http://www.dog-pound.net/house-breaking-puppies.htm

We house trained our black lab pup using puppy training pads in the house when she was too young to go outside. The pads were in the hall (where she sleeps at night and where shes kept when we’re out with a stair gate so she cant go up stairs) She was really good at them and only peed there. Once she had her jags we started moving her pads outside. SHe picked up going to the toilet outside quickly and during the day when we are in and can let her out regularly she goes outside, however if she can access the hall (if we don’t shut the door) or if we go out during the day she still pees in the hall. How do we teach her its not ok to still do the toilet in this area? Should we start crate training her? WHen we get up in the morning she has peed and pooed ALOT in the hall. Not sure what to do! Shes now 5 months! She is also chewing the wall and door frame in hall which is making me want to crate train!

It’s never too late to crate train, especially a puppy. I have 4 dogs (had 5 but 1 just passed away). Out of the 5, only one was a planned purchase. The rest were all rescues. Even at their older ages (all were over a year), I crate trained them. They were not destructive or making a "mess" in the house but it’s always a good idea to have a secure area they can go to and/or be in when you need them out from under foot. Also, if you ever had to board them, they would need to be comfortable in crates.
Train away!!!
