Archive for House Training A Puppy

Pretty simple really, just pick her up and take her outside whenever she needs to go.

i want to know how you house train a puppy (cocker spaniel)

I used the "Puppy Pads’ for night time. During the day I would take him to the front door, reward him for going to the door, let him out to do his business.

The reward for going to the front door worked very well. I first rewarded him when he came back in, but then he started to go out, turn around and come right back in, and beg for his reward.

I have a miniature schnauzer who is around 3 months old. He goes to the bathroom outside, but only if I let him outside fairly often. If I don’t, he goes on the carpet. I give him treats, and praise him when he goes outside, and I make him sit before I open the door, but he just can’t get the hang of going to the door when he needs to. If he goes on the carpet, I scold him, and put him outside right away. It especially happens when I’m sleeping at night, and am not awake to put him outside. I’ve tried puppy pads, but he doesn’t use them. He’ll go right beside the pad. Is there anything I can do to help him understand that he needs to go to the door if he has to go to the bathroom?
Thanks so much!

On thing I learned when in the potty training phase is don’t scold the bad behavor..dogs don’t respond well to that.
Instead OVER reward the good behavor..not just with treats but with tons of praise and petting..act kinda silly for awhile but it works.
As far as having him notify you about needing to go out in the middle of the night I would recomend the following:
1st: be patient this will only last a few months as they are still "training" their bladder.
2nd: Make sure to take him out as the last thing you do right before bed..he will start to make this a habbit
3rd: No water after the last potty..put it up on the counter for the night(he might be drinking thru out the night causing more potty time)
4th:If you can, tie a bell to a long string and tie it to the door handle that you take him out to potty. Before you take him out make sure the door is closed.
Take him over to the door and have him sit..ring the bell and tell him good dog..then ring it again a few more times..and repeat this a few times b4 taking him outside for the night. After a few nights go to the door and then wait for him to ring the bell himself then reward..
We did this with our pups and now they know if they need to go potty and the door is shut this will get our attention to go up and go open it.
5th:As for the potty pads they were such a mess for our pups. They would go on them and then just drag them around the kitchen making even more of a mess(we had to tape em down).
As a puppy I would suggest crate training for the night. Most puppies will not mess in their own crates. If he does need to go he will start whinning(this is only after he’s calmed down and stopped whinning from being trapped in a crate at night). This will also help save your carpet. The crates are plastic and can be wiped down with a cleaning cloth. You can even throw in a blanket that smells like you to help them be comfortable. As well give him a treat for being in their and eventually you’ll say "bed" and he will go right into the crate.
I hope this helps and remember patients above all else!!
Good luck!!

We have a 14 week puppy. He has been going to the bathroom on the paper just fine until about a week ago. Now, it’s as if he doesn’t know when he has to pee. He even pees while he is walking, and after he realizes he is peeing, he stops and pees wherever he is. Are we giving him too much water? Is something wrong? Is this normal? Please help!

If it’s hot, he may be drinking more so just take him out more often. Try to stick to a schedule each day so he can get used to knowing when it’s time to go out. He may just grow out of it once through the puppy stage

I have a lovely puppy called Lucy who is 4 months. She is a Staffy X Labrador and a great family pet. The only problem is house training. We have been using puppy training mats which she has no problem using for a wee but she poos where she likes. Furthermore I have a routine where I will take her out in the garden and sit out until she poos/wees and reward her with a treat afterwards but she will not do it and even after sitting out there half an hour, she will wait and then as soon as I take her in, she’ll wee or poo on the floor. If I leave her outside alone she just sits at the door howling to be in. I don’t know what to do really and with me having a 3 year old and being pregnant with a secon (due February) I am becoming increasingly worried that I won’t be able to cope when the baby is born and there will end up being poo and wee everywhere. Can anyone offer any advice?

Constant supervision is the key to quality house training. Your puppy simply must have instant, continual feedback about what behaviors are and are not appropriate. If you allow your puppy to roam the house while you pay no attention, and in the process pees on the floor and chews on the couch, he’s just learned that these behaviors are okay. Going back and punishing or scolding your dog after the fact does no good; feedback must be received while the behavior is taking place.
When you are not at home or are unable to supervise your puppy, contain him in an appropriately sized crate, or outdoors with shelter in appropriate weather. The crate should be kept clean and comfortable, and should contain chew toys to relieve boredom. Always reward your puppy for entering the crate, using praise and treats.

Take your puppy outdoors at regular intervals, and reward him with lavish praise and treats when he goes to the bathroom outside. If your dog likes going outside, always stay out with him for a few minutes after he goes to the bathroom. If you rush him indoors after he goes, you are in effect punishing him for going to the bathroom and he may learn to delay going potty in order to gain a longer walk.

I have heard of many ways to House Training A Puppy. What is the best way to house train or potty train a new puppy?

All of the above suggestions are wonderful, especially crate training. You really need to have a crate for your dog, and make sure in the beginning to always have him in the crate if you can’t 100% watch him. Make sure not to leave him in for longer than he can hold it (general rule of thumb: 1 hour per 1 month of age). Keep him leashed in the house as well, so he must stay near you and has as little opportunity for "accidents" as possible. That way you’re forced to pay attention to his behavior, and can pick up on the signs he may exhibit that he has to "go". One lovely trick that I did with my dog is teach her to ring a bell hanging on the front door doorknob when she needs to go out. Every time we took her to potty, we rang the bell before opening the door. Eventually she got the hint and now rings it when she wants to go outside!

Hi Paul…

We just got our first dog last month, his name is Rambo and he rocks!

hey giys i have a new puppy about 12 weeks old, its a pug, and im having a hard hard hard time house breaking it… i take it out alot, but it wont go to the bathroom outside, it just runs around and stays by my feet… so i give him about 10 min outside then i come in… then normally he is in for all of 2 min and he uses the bathroom in the house… i dont get it… help me out here what am i doing wrong?

you are not giving him enough time. Next time he goes inside pick it up and take it outside and then when you take him out take him to that spot and let him smell ! Then give him time. When it is potty time…make sure you don’t play with him and don’t talk to him except to say …go potty or something you want so he knows what that word is. this is potty time..not play time or time to talk. It is time to do business. When you play outside let him know that is play time. Dogs are very smart….you just have to be consistent and it will take time!

I have one dog that takes FOREVER to go….she can be out there for half hour and she will walk around and back and forth and back and forth and drives me nuts. She also refuses to go out in the rain. God forbid her feet get wet. I have to carry her out and set her in the grass !

You have to be consistent in your training or dogs get confused. You have to wait it out and then really praise him and pet him and tell him he is a good dog. ALWAYS take him to the same spot….so he can smell where he was and know what he is supposed to do.

Take him out every hour until he goes. Until then crate him or keep him on leash beside you constantly until he is goes outside a couple times. Then that spot will have his smell and if you use the same phrase….he will understand.

I take mine out and say…go potty. they know not to play…

Our 5-month-old German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix has been potty training for the past month. Like any dog, during training she has gone inside the house but it seems as if she is finally understanding that she is to only go outside in the backyard when we take her out. It’s been a week since she’s done anything in the house on accident. We take her out frequently…after meals, before play, morning, night, etc. Although, now we’re just wondering when and if she will ever let us know on her own that she has to go out?? I know all dogs are different but I’m a little afraid that she may never learn how to tell us that she needs to go outside and she will always have to depend on us. Is there a way to train them to get her to let us know by either wining, barking, etc?? Also, she isn’t the type of dog who likes barking. Please help! Thanks!
