<< Potty Training Your Puppy  Potty training a puppy? >>

My friend just got a shi tzu and after it eats they leave it in this crate-like thing with a bunch of newspapers until it finally poos or pees. Only when shes all done do they let her out of the crate. Do you this this will work? Because I have a puppy too and im trying to house break it.

No it won’t work at all. Crate training is about training a puppy NOT to eliminate in the crate.

Your friend needs a quick dose of the smarts. She will have this puppy going to the crate to pee and poop because that’s where she is teaching him to go. Your friend couldn’t be more wrong than she is.

They’ve got it backwards. The idea behind a crate is dogs won’t eliminate where they sleep if they can help it. Doing what they’re doing is going to make it really hard to housetrain that pup.

    that wont work..

the point of crate training is that you do NOT want the puppy to potty in the crate. Dogs dont like to pee and poop where they lay, so you crate it when you cant supervise.. and take the dog OUTSIDE to potty.

I would suggest the Porch Potty. It’s made of synthetic grass, which would help to distinguish the proper place to go. She will need to start moving the puppy to grass soon or she many never be able to break this problem.

You don’t want the puppy to continually think it’s okay to go in her crate. This could turn into a huge problem and lead to the only place the puppy goes is in the crate.

    Hope this helps!
