My dog (about a year and 4 months old) will not poo outside. He will willingly pee outside, but he continues to poo inside (and not on the puppy pads we set out for him either.) If you haveany suggestions that will be great, because if he is not housetrained soon, my mom is going to get him a house outside. He is a Teacup Yorkie and only weighs 5 pounds! So please HELP!
By the way, he has no specific poo time. He just poos whenever!!! That is one of the things that is very frustrating…

A dog that small should NOT be kept outside. It is too dangerous. If you cant housebreak him, then I would suggest you give him to someone who can, and who will keep him inside.
Try paying attention to the time of day when he goes (most dogs go about the same time every day, frequently right after they eat).
Make sure you take him outside at that time, then keep taking him back out at regular intervals until he goes. When he goes outside, praise him, and take him back in the house.
If he makes a mistake in the house, tell him "NO", then take both him and the poo outside, and place the poo where you want him to go. That way he will know where the bathroom is supposed to be :o)
You can use something like Natures Miracle to remove the smell in the house, so he is not tempted to go back to the same place.

I went to a few pages and I found one that I like. potty-training-puppies- now (dot) com. But, do these books work? I went to the library but the books seem to have old content. Has any one been to this site or bought from them before I buy?

Save yourself the money of buying a book. Search for Crate training for puppies on the net. This is by far the best way to house train a puppy.

Is it better to put them in a crate that is only big enough for them to sleep in at bed time, or is it better to put them in a crate with a sleeping area & a pee pad area? what do you find is more effective? this is only for during the night when it’s bed time!

crate big enough to sleep. dogs dont like to urintate where they sleep but you’ll have to wake up if he cries & take him out to go potty. but it shouldnt take more then a few weeks for him to be potty trained

Our 5-month-old German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix has been potty training for the past month. Like any dog, during training she has gone inside the house but it seems as if she is finally understanding that she is to only go outside in the backyard when we take her out. It’s been a week since she’s done anything in the house on accident. We take her out frequently…after meals, before play, morning, night, etc. Although, now we’re just wondering when and if she will ever let us know on her own that she has to go out?? I know all dogs are different but I’m a little afraid that she may never learn how to tell us that she needs to go outside and she will always have to depend on us. Is there a way to train them to get her to let us know by either wining, barking, etc?? Also, she isn’t the type of dog who likes barking. Please help! Thanks!

Try this website its a way of traing your puppy to tug a bell to let you know when they want to go out…

Drop her off at a rescue instead. You really shouldn’t have a dog.

I’ve been potty training my puppy for almost three weeks, I taught him to rattle the bell when he needs to go. I say he learned it, cuz almost every time he rattles the bell to tell us that he needs to go. But today, when I was playing with him, he was jumping up and down and was so excited, and all of a sudden he just peed like right away, with absolutely no signs or gestures or rattling bell. Does this mean that my puppy is not house broken yet? Why did he do that when he always knows to rattle the bell? Thanks!

Sometimes dogs lose control when they’re excited, no matter their level of housebreaking. He will probably grow out of it.

Just keep reinforcing what you’ve taught him, reward him for ringing the bell and peeing outside.

I have a 4 and a half month old lab mix at home who we’ve had for a couple months and he isn’t making any progress on his potty training. He frequently urinates right next to us after going outside less than a half hour beforehand.

Here is what we’ve done already to try and help him along:
-Attempted to put a bell on the door to try to get him to tell us and mandates he rings it before he gets to go out
-Made him wear male bands
-Yelled at him for going inside
-Given treats and praise for every potty outside
-Increased the frequency of his visits outside

Any other ideas? Feel free to ask me for any more information
We’ve also been crate training and he does just fine in the crate with no accidents so I know he CAN hold it.
I also don’t want people to get the wrong idea… we don’t yell at him all the time, only when we catch him in the act. I know that negative reinforcement is bad but we ran out of other ideas.

I would forget the bell, for the time being. Keep it simple :o)

I have heard of using male bands for marking, but never for potty training.

I have housetrained many, many dogs (none as young as yours, though) and this is the method I use:

If the dog pees inside, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner to remove the smell. If you CATCH the dog peeing inside, say NO (you dont need to yell), immediately pick the dog up and take it outside.

If the dog poops inside, pick the poop up and take it out to where you want the dog to go. Again, clean up with an enzyme cleaner. Again, if you CATCH the dog going, say NO and pick them BOTH up, and take them BOTH outside.

When the dog goes outside where he is supposed to, throw a party :o)

I take adult dogs outside last thing at night (before crating for the night), first thing in the morning, and every two hours during the day (if that is not enough for a puppy, someone who knows puppies can tell you).

I keep dogs who are not yet housebroken confined to areas where there is no carpet, because most dogs prefer to use a soft surface, plus I can spot a mess more quickly that way.

I think you may be missing the crucial enzyme cleaner step. I use Natures Miracle. Dogs recognize the "bathroom" by the smell, so you need to be sure to remove any smell inside. Plus, you need to establish the smell outside. That is why you need to take the poop out with you.

What is the most affective way of House Training A Puppy?

Bell training it works, hang a bell on the door he would use ring it when you take him out every time, before long he,ll be ringing it to go out.

That sounds wonderful doesnt it. Unfortunately when you go to pick up your dog, You’ll see how great he works with the trainer but he wont work the same for you. Its the owner who needs to be taught how to work the dog. Owners who are not sure what to do are not consistant. All that money you just gave that trainer will be flushed. Once the consistency stops, the dog will regress. And you will end up with the same dog you started out with. A obediance class will work awesome for you. PetSmarts is a 8 week course, only once a week. Good luck

12 week old puppy, crate training. Taking her out alot, and she has been ok with eliminating outside. I set out an orange cone as the "spot" for her to eliminate, within the circle of her leash. My wife thinks this is nuts, we should just be happy if she goes outside whereever. I think that keeping her near the exact spot each time will get her to go faster as she smells the previous eliminations. What is right?

Nope. Great idea!
Easier to clean up and won’t kill the entire lawn. You’ll find it goes a lot faster too.
