Welcome to my blog about Potty Training Puppies. This is one of the first tasks to tackle when you bring home your new pet. And, it’s one of the most important. Proper training right from the start will make it easier for you and your new best friend.
We’ve had two dogs from puppies. A Golden Retriever named Pirate who lived until he was 16 and a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier named Una (rhymes with tuna and means ‘unity’ and ‘little lamb’ in Gaelic). Both were crate-trained with great succes.
However, crate-training isn’t the only way to go. As you’ll discover in the various articles and videos on this page, there are a number of methods. The common thread is the use of consistency and patience. Read and view to discover the method that’s right for you.

I have heard of many ways to House Training A Puppy. What is the best way to house train or potty train a new puppy?
All of the above suggestions are wonderful, especially crate training. You really need to have a crate for your dog, and make sure in the beginning to always have him in the crate if you can’t 100% watch him. Make sure not to leave him in for longer than he can hold it (general rule of thumb: 1 hour per 1 month of age). Keep him leashed in the house as well, so he must stay near you and has as little opportunity for "accidents" as possible. That way you’re forced to pay attention to his behavior, and can pick up on the signs he may exhibit that he has to "go". One lovely trick that I did with my dog is teach her to ring a bell hanging on the front door doorknob when she needs to go out. Every time we took her to potty, we rang the bell before opening the door. Eventually she got the hint and now rings it when she wants to go outside!
I have a one year old puggle and she’s partly potty trained. I take her out as soon as i get out of bed and she does her business and i give her a treat. She also tends to go pee separatly then when she poos. She’ll pee, run inside and then i’ll see her at the door again. I’ll take her out and she’ll poo. Note that i’m not calling her after she pees, she does this herself. Also, she does know to go to the back door and whine, bark or scratch to be let out to pee or poo, but sometimes she’ll sneak away and just do her business in a hidden spot in the house. I’ve tried to minimize these spots by restricting her availability to the house but I can’t understand why she can’t hold it in or wait to be let out.
She mostly does this when I am not around. I moved back with my parents and they have been changing her dog food around because they buy cheap dog food. I attribute this to the increase in peeing and pooing because she needs to eat more to feel full and its full of salts and whatnot so she needs to drink more. Am I right? Should i go out and buy the old, better dog food myself that I used to give her and will this minimize her potty useage? And how do i get her to be 100% potty trained? I would say she’s about 70% trained but still goes when I’m not around…I was told puggles are spiteful when their masters leave but do I need to do the crate thing until she understands that is only for OUTSIDE?
Sorry for the multiple questions too…but thanks for your help in advance.
Walk her on a leash until she does both. Most dogs don’t pee and poop in the same spot. They typically pee first then walk around a bit and then poo. Definitely add crate training. After you walk her, if she hasn’t pooped and you think she should have, then crate her and about 20-30 minutes later bring her back outside and try again. This worked wonders for a stubborn manchester that we have. Go back to the good food.
I have read tons of information about Potty Training Puppies to go outside. I am currently using pads to train my Min Pin because I live in Germany and it is WAY to cold to bring him outside without a sweater or jacket (and I can’t find any that are small enough for him!). I am worried that I am training him to go in the house, but because of the cold, I can’t take him outside until he figures out that he is supposed to go outside. I can’t see him knowing that he is supposed to go out there and the few times I have taken him out, he just looks at me like "what?" and starts shaking uncontrollably. I don’t think he is afraid, just really cold. I do plan on teaching him to go out once the weather warms up and we can spend more time outside, but does anyone have any ideas for now? He is doing well with his pads and is learning with "Go Potty!" He is 3 months old and about 2.5 pounds. Thanks!!
Ok- I understand that he NEEDS to go outside even in incliment weather. I have no problem taking him out in cold weather once he isn’t 2.5 pounds!! At that weight they lose 2-3 degrees of body temperature in a matter of minutes. I am not going to kill him becuase I want him to go outside. I am asking what I can do to get him to go outside once it starts getting warmer; my concern is that because it has been so cold (and I’m keeping him inside) once the weather warms up, he won’t go outside. Next winter, he will be bigger and I can get a jacket or sweater on him in enough time to get him outside to go. Right now he is just too small.
Try taking the pads outside, if you’ve got one that he’s previously used, bring that one out there to start. Gradually over the course of a few weeks cut the pads down until he is eventually not using one. I’ve done this with a few dogs that were "surface" picky, works pretty well.

Hi Paul…
We just got our first dog last month, his name is Rambo and he rocks!
He was peeing everywhere, so I did some Google searching and came across this:

This helped us a ton and hopefully it helps you too.

I’m getting a German Shepherd, and I want it for a house dog…Please help:)
Here is some info I thought might help. They are both written for training adult dogs:

From my experience, its all about having a routine. Hope this helps.
I’ve had her for a week and I’ve even bought her the puppy training pads, but all she does is tear them up.
I don’t know if you are intersted in this but my chihuahua is trained to use a litter box when the weather is to yucky for him. It is not that difficult to do and they actually make puppy litter (cat litter works fine also)
Or….you can keep your puppy leashed when she is outside of her kennel. Do not let her get any further then 6 feet away from you then she will not be able to sneak off and go potty. You can catch her quickly and take her outside. When she goes potty outside praise her. This is truely the easiest way to correct this proble. If you can not have her leashed with you then put her into her kennel (not for long periods of time though) . If she is not kennel trained then I would get this done right away. Do not let her have endless supply of food and water. Only let her have it at certain times of the day will also help to controll when she needs to get. Be persistant and you will win the puppy potty battle.
My husband and I will be getting a shih tzu puppy in 2 weeks. I am definately excited!!! The breeder that were getting the dog from says she will have the dog potty trained and also will be training him in other areas too.
I plan on training the puppy more and continuing the training. My question is are there any good websites regarding training methods for puppies/dogs?
I’d recommend that you contact a trainer for a good puppy socialization class. That will teach you everything you need to know, plus make sure that your puppy is properly socialized. Contact a trainer from the Association of Pet Dog Trainers:

Socializing your puppy correctly is essential and can prevent lifelong problems with shy/fearfulness.
Boomer has some new tricks to show off. Among the newer ones are moonwalk and bow. I am currently trying to combine back, come, and twirl into one command: line dance.
