what is the next bit where they let me know when they want to go out, they go out voluntarily, but not if the doors are shut, they are 12 weeeks old! and i dont have to worry about night time because I can leave the warm laundry room door open! not been able to take them out yet, final jab is next week.

I like to hang a small bell on the door… Each time you take them out, jingle the bell…soon they will catch on to jingling the bell when they need to go out..Consistency is the key..

Sounds like you are on the right track..

Hi, I want to use a dog crate just to house train my puppy. Once it’s trained and integrated into the family I’m planing on removing the crate and replacing with a bed. Main reason is space needed for a cage to fit a fully grown Labrador. Is this ok, or will it cause confusion/ anxiety to the dog?

It won’t "create" anything but piss&shit & a torn/chewed up house.
When you’ve lived w/the crate for a *YEAR*,you won’t notice.

I have a 8-week old puppy, and she keeps pooping in the house. I don’t want to have to get rid of her, but it’s getting really old. We’ve had her for 2 weeks, and I am totally sick of picking up crap!
She is a mix. The mom is a pit bull/lab mix, the dad is a bulldog.

I would reccomend crate training this helped so much! You can research it online, the best thing to do is take them to potty is 10 minutes after they eat , drink, play and wake from a nap. When you take your pup outside say go potty, make potty over and over again, when your pup goes prais her like crazy and take her back inside. She will soon learn that when she makes potty outside she gets praised and gets to go back in the house. and when crate training, when ever you cant physically keep an eye on your pup, put her in her crate, she will avoid messing in her "den" at all costs. When you can watch her again take her out of her crate and take her out side to potty again. when she goes bring her back in. If you do this with out letting her mess inside it will cut your potty training time by more than half.

How long does it take to train a Boxer puppy to let you know he has to go potty.. example.. scratching the door or ringing a bell that’s hanging on the door. Sometimes ours does it, sometimes not.. he’s 5 months old. What do you think???

I have two Boxers they are my babies. My three year old took about 7-8 months to get it down pat (no mistakes at all). My baby boy who’s almost six months barely has the hang of it. He knows not to go in the house, however as the owner you have to stay on top of them. It’s your job to read their mind, if you see them sniffing or wondering away from you immediately put them outside. Be sure to have lil’ treats to praise them when they do go outside(that is very important) Also remember a puppy does not have control of their bladder until about 5-6 months. Good Luck!! Boxers are soo much fun!!

He will mainly be inside the house.

the first thing to remember about House Training A Puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it’s thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it’s spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit…. yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck

I am working on housetraining my dog. She is 6 months old and we have had a few accidents, which I blame on me not the dog. When she is indoors she is either in her crate or I have her on a leash that I attach to my belt loop so that I could get stuff done and know where she is at and what she is doing. Is having her on a leash attached to me OK? Is that teaching her to be my shadow? and is that ok? When I or my husband sit down to watch TV we let her play in the living room and kitchen freely as long as we know where she is at.

It sounds like your are on the right track. The more supervision the dog has the less likely an accident will occur and theshadowing is a good thing because it teaches the puppy always to be aware of you. Good job

I have been trying to potty train my shih tzu puppy and I read to leash train at same time to keep him from playing when I take him out to do his business. But he just lays down and I tried pulling on leash to get him to follow but I feel bad, how do I go about doing this?

Here’s two very important topics that you have to go about,

Just be consistent and everything will be fine.

I have a 11 week puppy. Sometimes after taking her out to do her business she comes in and does it inside the house but not in the training pad. Why does she do it when i just took her outside?
any pooty training tips?

I have housebroken at least 15 dogs in my lifetime. The absolute best way to train a dog is by crate training. As a small puppy, the dog is in the crate when not being taken out potty, feeding, or being played with. Puppies are a lot like babies, they sleep a lot. A good hint is that as soon as the puppy wakes up–take him out. Do NOT use pads or paper unless you want him to do that his whole life.

Even when he is out of the crate and you are playing with him, leave the crate door open. At some point, he will think of the crate as his space.

I kept my dogs crated when not home until they were probably about 2 years old. Puppies and teen dogs like to chew things up, so a crate eliminates a lot of damage that could be done.

Be sure the crate is big enough to still fit the dog when it is full grown.
