I have a male cross-bred puppy, I got him from a rescue centre (so he is not really house trained).
My problem is that I let him out at night (until he barks to come back in). There is always pee on the floor in the morning (we have newspaper all over the kitchen). He is left sometimes during the day but never makes a mess (we usually walk him in the woods first - is this why?).
Any training trips please?

When you let him outside at night, go out with him and make sure that he urinates. Praise him. Make sure that you pick up his water about 2 hours before you are ready for bed. You will have to use a strong cleanser to remove the smell of the urine on the kitchen floor. Check with your vet, they will have pet safe cleaners. Even though you may not be able to smell anything your puppy can and until the odor is removed, he will continue to do this.

If this does not work, you will need to crate him at night for about a two week period. This can be a dog kennel or a cardboard box that he can not climb out of. It needs to be just big enough for him to lay down in. Dogs will not mess in their cage if they can at all avoid it. As soon as you get up in the morning, take him out to an area in the yard that you want him to use as his restroom. As soon as he goes, really praise him and pet him. Take him in immediately. If you want him to play outside, that is okay, AFTER he does his business and you take him inside. Once he is inside after a couple of minutes you can let him outside to play. This shows him that you expect him to go outside for urination. You must do this constistantly for the two week period and he must urinate before you let him back inside.

As he gets older he will have more control over his bladder and you will not have to put his water up at night. And walking does help a dog take care of his business so the walk in the woods is very helpful.

Whatever you do, do not spank or rub the puppies nose is his puddle. He will not know what he is getting introuble for. If you see him squatting, clap your hands together loudly and in a firm voice, without using his name, say, "Bad dog!" Pick him up and take him outside, when he does his business, in a softer voice, praise him and pet him. Discipline and praising only work if they are done immediately after what you do not like or immediately after the behavior you do like.

Dogs are pack animals and by making him do what you want him to, you will become the Alpha. You can also achieve this by making him sit before you put his food down for him to eat. Dogs want to have an alpha, if you aren’t the alpha, he will.

Good luck and these suggestions should work for you.

My sister has a 2ish year old rottie, she is house trained(shes a rescue dog thats why we don’t know her exact age) we’ve had for about 8 months. the dog has seperation anexity from my sister. we don’t really like to crate her for more than like 2 hours so one of us will stay home with the dog. Lately its been that when my sis leaves for just like 5 hours and i’m here with the dog she’ll poop in the house near the front door! Also i take her out usually once an hour just to make sure she won’t have an accident…I left her alone for 20MINS and she pooped in the house. She’s like watching an infant. does anybody have any thoughts thanks
the dog is crate trained, i just dont like leaving her in it for long periods of time. she only does it when her mommy isnt here. and no we are not getting rid of her b/c shes a rescue dog she doesn’t need to bounce from home to home because she makes a handful of mistakes.

your sister’s rottie is showing a sign of separation anxiety.

dogs are like children, infact they are children for many people.

maybe keep her entertained when leaving like treats, dog nyla bones, raw hides, etc.

I have a small puppy that is about 6 weeks old who I want to potty train. My husband wants to install a doggy door but he has not yet (and may not for a few weeks) so I need to decide on a potty training method–quick! Should I do crate training since she is primarily indoors or will a doggy pad do until we install the doggy door? I don’t want to confuse her. Also, my husband and I are at home during the day.

We trained our puppy to use the bathroom outside simply by taking her outside every four hour to go to the bathroom. At first she didn’t get it and would just want to play but sooner or later she would go and we would bring her back in. Also, if she had an accident in the house we would take her over to the "crime scene" and stick her nose right down next to it, it may sound cruel but it will teach the dog that the house is not an okay spot to use the bathroom. Dogs are smart animals and it will quickly learn the routine.
I don’t recommend using the mat because you want the dog to learn that going to the bathroom is for outside only so that when you build your doggy door it will be easier for you to train the dog.

I got 2 shit-tzu puppies 3 weeks ago and need some new and proven effective ways to potty train them! If you have ever had success on training your puppy plez let me know!!!!

mazy out!

Ok, well I have two Shih Tzu puppies as well, and this is what we did:
Hang a bell from the door on a string..low enough for them to reach w/ paws…Everytime you take them out (start out like every 1/2 hour or so..), say "ring the bell!" and make their paws touch the bell. Open the door immediately. Give them a treat when they come back in. It took ours about 2-3 weeks, and now they are doing really well…Keep them on a feeding schedule..not free feeding…this will help. Feed them about 1/2 c. in morning and another 1/2 cup at dinner time.
Always take them out the same door, so they get used to going out and associating that door w/ potty breaks.
Good luck!!

~Also, I would suggest kenneling/crating them at night to avoid accidents throughout the house…

My puppy is 13 weeks old. I take her out to potty during the fday and leave her a newspaper near her bed when I go to bed. She had very few accidents after training for a couple of weeks, which is great considering my house is carpeted all over !
i travel once a month and stay in a hotel for 2-3 days and i take the puppy with me. I put some newspaper in the restroom just in case and she does her business there without my direction.
when I came home thinkng that newspaper will be effective i put some in the restroom.
after a few hours i noticed that she peed in there ! but problem is she’s having more accidents on carpet (same location where she had her accidents before) !!!

what would be the best thing to do ?

I JUST POTTY TRAINED MY PUPPY, SHE LEARNED QUICK WHEN SHE HAD AN ACCIDENT I SAY UGGG!!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO, IN A DISSAPOINTED VOICE AND SHE GOT THE HINT, NEWSPAPERS I NEVER USED, I CRATE TRAINED AND WAS THERE TO TAKE HER OUT. IF YOU ARE NOT, TRY TO SEE IF SOMEONE ELSE CAN BE FOR YOU, IT MAKES THE PROCESS SO MUCH EASIER.

If you were to adopt an adult dog that is already house trained, could you train it to go in an a specific area of the yard?

yes! Every time she needs to go out side, leash her and take her to the designated spot where you want her to do her business, try not to let her go anywhere else in the yard. Put a word to her designated spot.. "Go pee" and take her there. Praise her with pats, love and ocassionally a treat. She will get it..as long as Your consistant.

Good Luck.

I can let my 3 dogs loose in the yard, and tell them "get over there" and they will all walk over to the correct spots and do their business. Of course it took time, but now I don’t even have to step outside the door :).. and they we all rescued as young adults.

Okay so i got a puppy in March after I had to put my 8 year old Shih tzu down. She will not go potty outside for anything. She will hold it until she comes back inside. She will only go on the carpet. She is now 7 months old. She is a Malchi which is a Maltese-chihuahua mix! Anyone have any tips for me?

You can buy some spray that you can spray in areas you want them to pee in. It smells horrible, like pee, but if they smell it they will think it’s ok to pee there because another dog already has. Google some potty training tips.

I’m having a really hard time potty training my puppy. I’ve been trying for about 3 weeks now and she doesnt quite get it. Any tips?? Please!
(she is 2 months old and we live in an apartment so its a lot harder to ‘take her outside’)

You might consider this method> http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm
Please ignore the part about yelling at the dog, though !!
