I have a 4 month old husky/german shepherd puppy who is crate and house trained. She’s already been spayed. I’ve had her for a little over a month and never had an accident in the house. I took her out to go to the bathroom and she peed right on the stoop (never done that before) then she peed the rest in the backyard. We came inside and sat down a couple minutes later she got up and peed on my floor. Why? Is this normal? Does this mean somethings wrong? She wasn’t scared or nervous, she was acting completely normal. It seems like an lot of pee for a little puppy. It’s not like she’s been drinking more than usual. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Take the puppy to the vet. It may not be anything serious, but it’s never harmful to take preventative measures. However, it seems like there is nothing wrong. Perhaps you didn’t let her finish outside. Often times, puppies learn that you bring them in immediately after doing their business, so they hold a little bit, to make it so that you have to take them back out. This may be a case of that. Let her run around a bit after she goes, if you haven’t been doing that, and you may notice she’ll pee again a few minutes after the initial pee.

We took in a stray a month ago, and he and my other boy dog have to mark each other’s territory all day-even after coming inside from their walks. We got them both neutered today and I’m hoping this will help.

What are some good techniques that work? I’ve met people that have trained their dogs so that they NEVER go in the house, and they can just open the door and the dogs do their business and come back in w/out wandering off. I don’t know how they did it. Please help!

1 is a Rat Terrier Mix and 1 is a Mini Dachshund, both about 1 y/o.

get 2 crates and crate train them. here’s a great link that explains why and how crate training works. glad you got them neutered that definatly was a step in the right direction!

Okay, I just got him Saturday and already my house smells like a kennel. I’ve walked him around the block, sat outside with him for thirty minutes at a time and it never fails that once we get back inside he pees on the floor.

Any suggestions on disciplining my new puppy and training him to do his business outside?

Here are a few things you may be missing in the yard (see the link for actual training).
1. Is the outside area small? (if it is then feeding out there and expecting him to go out there won’t fly as dogs don’t like to pee and poop where they eat or sleep so make sure there is plenty of room or feed him indoors then take him out straight away).

2. Is the outside too clean? If there is not a scent of his own urine he will be less keen to go there. Try to leave it for a while (i know this is not very nice for you but it will speed things up).

Good luck :D

and how and can you stop this? also how old are puppies when they first come in heat ?

I use this…http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751999
It really worked for my puppy…

My 11 week old puppy used to chew on his pad, but he couldn’t anymore. He goes on the pad everytime he has to go potty and have nearly no accidents.

I use these pads…

The pads and the pad holder work wonders for my pup.

My husband and I brought our new puppy home from the pound last week. She is between 6-9 weeks old. From what we can tell she is a shepard/collie mix. She is doing quite well with doing #2 outside, however we are having a time with her urinating in the house. Its seems like she goes about every 10 minutes. Most of the time totally without warning. When I see her sniff I immediately take her out. When I catch her in the act (which is most of the time) I scold her with a "NO MIKA" then take her outside. Whenever she goes outside she gets praise and a treat. What do I do to stop the urinating in the house.

Also she is chewing on us an awful lot. It seems like she is more interested in chewing on us than any of her toys. We have tried a stern no and immediately giving her a toy she is allowed to chew on. Also yelping like a puppy when she bites. Now I have made a can with pennies to deter her with a loud noise.

We are crate training her and she seems to do well.

I might take her to the vet to see if she has a UTI or something if she pees that much. What might work is take her outside when she is not peeing and rewarding her when she does outside, while continuing to scold her if she pees inside. She’ll make the connection (hope, hope)

My pups were never allowed to nibble on us. We do not strike our dogs but when they nipped us, they got a light thump on the nose. Nothing hard, just enough to be unpleasant, with a simultaneous scold.

You didn’t tell us how old the dog is, but this works for any age, however, an older dog would need less frquent feedings and outings.
Routine is the most important aspect of training. From the beginning, feed 4 times per day, at the same times, and put the bowl up in 5 minutes, or when finished.

A puppy will need to go just minutes after eating, so whisk him outside, and stay with him until she ‘goes’..Giver him lots of praise when he does his job, play a few minutes, and come back in..

If you can spread down a bag of sand, from a garden center, it will give him a good place to go, so you can kind of aim him there, and not just all over your yard..

He should only need to go poop after eating, and perhaps at bedtime..

However, he will need water down at all times, and need to pee frequently..so, outside every other hour for that..and keep a close eye on him..He will need to go during active play, and every time he wakes from a nap..If you watch him, you will see him acting restless, and sniffing the floor, etc when he needs to go..at first, peeing may be just a matter of pausing, and uh-oh, there it is..He won’t even be aware…So its important to never scold him for peeing…this is what makes traumatized pups that refuse to pee outside, or try to hide it in the house..as they get scolded for it, and it becomes a traumatic event..
Keep the product, Nature’s Miracle, on hand, for instant cleaning of pee spots…or ask your pet supply which enzyme cleaner they recommend..

Puppies physiology only allows them to help pee for about 1 hour per month of age…so expecting any more is unrealistic..a good reason for a playpen at night..or kennel/crate at night. He may hold it through the night, but is likely to need to pee at least once during the night..Unless itis an older dog.You can remove the water a couple of hours before bedtime..

By following a routine, and being ever watchful for the first few days, you can have him petty well trained in just a couple of weeks..or less

I house-train all of my pups before they ever leave my home, and I do it an entire litter at a time..it normally takes about 4-5 days, with very few accidents..
But, if you hang a little bell on the door, or a desk bell on the floor, and show him you are ringing the bell each time you take him out, he is likely to begin ringing the bell when he needs to go..Just be very vigilant, and yet stay relaxed..an accident doesn’t mean failure..
Remember, it takes forever to potty train a human baby, and it is so nice that puppies can learn it so much faster, but they are still allowed to be babies, and don’t deserve to be stressed about the training…
If you have important areas to keep clean, just keep him away from those areas until he is a bit older..

I recommend using a harness for the walking and leash training, as it is less frightening and stressful..eventually, as trust is developed, you can switch to a collar..but a soft harness takes the fear away from the beginning…Walking stimulates the bowels to move, more so than just putting the dog out..

I am a student so there are just 2 days a week when I am gone all day. My worry is that the work I do to potty train her on the other days will be undone on the days I leave her alone (just got her).
Anyone have advice on potty training when you have to work/go to school?
Thanks
She’s about 2 months old and is a French Mastiff (if that helps).

Two words. Crate training.

I crate trained my dog and she grew up to looooove her crate! it got to the point where i didn’t need to use it anymore but she would still go in there and hang out because it was her "safe place". Contrary to some people’s beliefs it is NOT mean and cruel. Make sure you get the right size for your dog (you may have to get larger ones as she gets bigger) and your local pet store can help you find the perfect one. I would put my dog in the crate at night when I coudn’t monitor her potty breaks and when I went to work. Dogs will not go where they sleep and so she will not empty her bladder (or worse) in her crate. The length of time she can be left in there depends on her age so that is something else you would need to ask your vet or pet store employee. It will also help train her to hold her bladder so that she does not need to be taken out every hour. Just make sure the first thing you do when you get home is take her outside to pee! Good luck!

Hi, I recently purchased a new puppy. This is my first time owning a dog so I’m quite new to this. My question is how to train a puppy to urinate and take a crap outside oppose to random places she has urinated to my house. So far it has urinated and took a crap outside a few times compared to the numerous times it has done in my house whether it’s on my carpet, by the door I can’t seem to train this dog. I’m new to this to this and I don’t know how long it would take but I’ve had her for a week so far. How long would it take to train a puppy. By the way it’s a 2 month old almost 3 month old Siberian Husky. Also the feeding schedule I have for her is I feed her twice a day. I feed her at around 10 in the morning and 9:30 to 10 PM at night. Usually I feed Royal Cannin. After 40 minutes to an hour I walk her after she finishes eating. Is this a good time frame from and after I feed her I should walk her? In need of some suggestions THANKS

Lets just KISS this one kiddo
Keep It Simple Sweetie

Take your puppy outside upon
waking up
eating
drinking water
playing for 10-15 mins
and especially right before you go to bed.

Keep an eye on your puppy and you will soon recognize the *what* that she does right before she goes potty.

When you take your puppy outside stay with her and say your potty word.. I say *hurry up*… once your puppy *goes* bring her back into the house and be very happy and excited and give her a treat…

She will learn to go fast so she can come inside to get a treat…

Good Luck

House training my New Puppy
Often asked question, the one thing every new pup owner dreads

Things you need to know first, before you start.
Pups normally arrive to their new home when they are between 8-10 weeks of age. Unfortunately they do not have full bladder control at this age, it is physically impossible for your pup to hold onto it. When he has to go, he will go. How long do I wait then you ask? Well you don’t, you start to teach as soon as pup arrives, but you don’t expect too much, or the impossible.

By 12 weeks his body has matured and bladder control finally kicks in. Even so, the max amount of time he can hold it for will be between 2-4 hours.

1. Pick a spot outside where you intend for pup to go.

2. Every time you take pup out use the same spot.

3. Take pup out as often as every hour for the first week.

4. Take pup out after every feed, drink, exercise, play time.

Even if pup doesn’t go, that’s fine, just wait with pup for a few minutes, if you get a result then give heaps and heaps of praise.
Be consistant, don’t give up and never rub pups nose in his excrements if he does do it inside, all you will do is confuse the pup and possibly turn him against you.
